A brand-new, full-height treated timber paling fence built by Reno Fresh on Kokiri Crescent, Porirua — set above an existing timber retaining wall on an elevated hillside boundary, delivering complete privacy and a clean, uniform timber line.
This latest Reno Fresh build on Kokiri Crescent, Porirua is a great example of a straightforward brief executed properly: a brand-new, full-height treated timber paling fence that instantly changes the feel of the property. Built along an elevated boundary above an existing timber retaining wall, the new fence gives the homeowners complete privacy and a clean, uniform timber line where there was none before.
As fence builders serving Wellington, Porirua and the wider region, we take pride in getting the fundamentals right: solid posts, strong framing, and tight, consistent paling installation from end to end.

The Project
This Porirua property needed a full-height boundary fence that would stand above the existing timber retaining wall running along the rear of the section. The brief was a solid, private fence that looks tidy, handles the exposed hillside setting, and lasts — the kind of fence you fit once and forget about.
The finished fence runs in a clean, unbroken line above the retaining wall, with each paling set tight against the next for a solid, private barrier. The fresh treated timber already lifts the whole back section, and the uniform top line gives the boundary a crisp, finished look from every angle.
How We Built It
Posts and Framework
The foundation of any good fence is the post and rail frame. We set treated timber posts at regular intervals, concreted in for stability, then fixed horizontal rails between them to form the structural backbone of the fence. Working above an existing retaining wall means the fence takes the full force of the wind — so the frame is bolted through the posts with galvanised coach bolts and square washers, keeping everything tight and rigid for years of Wellington-region weather.
Paling Installation
Treated timber palings were fixed vertically over the rails and set tight against one another for a solid, private finish. We check alignment as we go, so the top of the fence runs in one clean, consistent line along the full length of the boundary.
Treated Timber
All timber used on this project is treated for outdoor exposure, with ground-contact rated posts. Fresh treated pine can be left to weather naturally to a soft silver-grey, or stained or painted later to suit the home.
Why a Full-Height Timber Paling Fence?
Despite the growing range of fencing options, a well-built timber paling fence remains one of the most trusted boundary solutions in New Zealand:
- Privacy. Tight-set palings create a solid, uninterrupted barrier that screens the property from neighbours and the surrounding hillside.
- Strength. Properly posted, bolted and braced framing stands up to years of wind, rain and general wear.
- Value. For a long boundary run, timber paling delivers the most fence for your money.
- Repairability. If a paling or rail is ever damaged, it can be replaced individually, keeping long-term maintenance costs low.
