A solid, full-height timber paling fence is one of the most enduring and practical choices for Hutt Valley homeowners, and this latest Reno Fresh build on Stokes Valley Road is a great example. A 33 metre driveway boundary at 1.8 metres high, framed with bolted rails and finished with tight palings and a timber cap.
A tall, solid boundary fence is one of the most effective upgrades you can make to a Hutt Valley property, and this latest build on Stokes Valley Road, Stokes Valley is a great example of what a properly framed timber paling fence delivers. The Reno Fresh team built a brand-new 33 metre, 1.8 metre high treated timber paling fence along a long driveway boundary, giving the property complete privacy, a clean straight line and a finish built to last.
As fence builders serving Wellington and the Hutt Valley, we focus on the fundamentals: solid posts, strong framing and tight, consistent palings from one end of the fence to the other.

The Project
This Stokes Valley property needed a long, full-height boundary fence running alongside the driveway. The brief was simple: a solid, private fence that looks tidy from the street and drive, stands up to the valley winds, and doesn't need constant maintenance.
The finished fence runs 33 metres in one unbroken line, standing 1.8 metres high with a capped top and palings set tight from end to end. From the driveway it presents as a clean, uniform timber wall; from the garden side, the framing is neat, square and built to carry the load.

How We Built It
Posts and Framework
Every good fence starts below the surface. We set treated timber posts at regular intervals along the boundary, concreted in for stability, then fixed three horizontal rails between them to form the structural backbone. The rails are bolted through the posts with galvanised coach bolts and square washers, a heavier-duty fixing than nails or screws alone, which keeps the frame tight and resists the racking that Wellington-region wind puts on a tall solid fence over the years.

Paling Installation
Treated timber palings were fixed vertically over the rails and set tight against one another for a solid, private finish. We check alignment as we go, so the top of the fence runs in a clean, consistent line along the full length of the run rather than drifting over the length of a long boundary.
Capping
A timber cap runs along the top of the fence. It gives the fence a finished, professional look and shields the palings' end grain from rain, which is where untreated or exposed timber tends to start deteriorating first.
Treated Timber Throughout
All timber used on this project is treated for outdoor exposure, with ground-contact rated posts. Fresh treated pine has a warm, natural look and can be left to weather to a soft silver-grey, or stained or painted later to suit the house.
Why a Full-Height Timber Paling Fence?
Despite the growing range of fencing options, a well-built timber paling fence remains one of the most trusted boundary solutions in New Zealand. Here is why it suited this job:
- Privacy. Tight-set palings create a solid, uninterrupted barrier that screens the property from the driveway and neighbours.
- Strength. Properly posted, bolted and braced framing stands up to years of wind, rain and general wear.
- Value. For a long boundary run, timber paling delivers the most fence for your money.
- Repairability. If a paling or rail is ever damaged, it can be replaced individually, keeping long-term maintenance costs low.
